Open Textbooks: Open Textbook Repositories

Database of OA textbooks and course materials

An Open Textbooks project hosted by a Canadian publicly funded organization that supports higher education in British Columbia. This project produces developmentally edited, scholarly peer reviewed textbooks on the traditional model, that are published under a Creative Commons license.

Mostly Open (Creative Commons) but some free or low cost textbooks from all over the web. Some are peer reviewed and accessible; others are not. MERLOT has a powerful search tool that allows you to narrow down by topic, level, and resource type.

Over 100 professionally proof-read and formatted, peer reviewed textbooks in all subjects. All are Creative Commons; Many are CC-BY. Available in PDF and HTML format for free; Epub and print versions available at low cost. Some incorporate multimedia.

From Rice University. Thousands of digital textbooks (called Collections) and tens of thousands of smaller chunks of remixable content (called Pages or Knowledge Chunks.) The focus is in high need and high enrollment subject areas and levels. All of the content is in the Creative Commons. Collections can be exported as PDF or Epub format. There are already collected and peer reviewed Collections that are ready-made Open Textbooks.

From the University of Minnesota. A catalog of Open Textbooks from all over the web. All are no cost to download; reviewed by higher education faculty; and hosted either by a college or university, a professional organization, or a scholarly society.

These Open Textbooks and lowcost textbooks from the Florida Orange Grove project have been through developmental editing and peer review. Digital copies are free; print copies are low-cost.

One of the more collaborative, less traditional open textbooks platforms. "Anybody can edit." This platform is ideal for a constructivist learning environment where students all contribute to the creation of a textbook.

Milne Open Textbooks - Formerly SUNY Open Textbooks. An initiative to publish Open Textbooks authored and peer reviewed by SUNY faculty and copy-edited and formatted by SUNY librarians.
