Both Mendeley & Zotero:

  • store references in your account  
  • format bibliographies and in-text citations in many citation styles
  • add notes about resources
  • insert citations into MS Word documents
  • save PDFs to your account
  • organize your references in folders or using tags
  • sync across devices
  • can be used after you leave the university (Use a non-SUNY Empire email address to register)

Mendeley is best if you:

  • need more storage space
  • want to collaborate with other researchers online
  • want to find papers related to what you are reading
  • like options for how to import and create references
  • use a lot of PDF content
  • like private support help

Zotero is best if you:

  • value reliable syncing across devices
  • want to easily move your resources from other tools into your account
  • want to create unlimited groups to share with
  • need less storage space
  • use a lot of non-PDF content like images, audio, video, or other files
  • use resources from sites like YouTube and Flickr.
  • don't mind posting publicly for support help
  • like to use iOS apps (Android apps available 3rd party)
  • want to save snapshots of webpages to your account
  • use Google Docs

  • Download Mendeley desktop program.
  • Free with option to pay to upgrade for more cloud storage or share with larger groups.

Get Started

Create an account:

Mendeley:

  1. Click Create a free account on the website.
  2. Provide your contact details and create a password.
    • Do not select "Sign in via your institution." It doesn't work for SUNY Empire.
  3. You will receive an email confirmation from Elsevier, the owner of Mendeley. 

Zotero:

  1. Register for a free account
  2. Fill out the registration form and security CAPTCHA. 
  3. You will receive an email confirmation from Zotero.
