Borrowing Print Books from University at Albany Libraries

Steps to Borrow Books

University at Albany Libraries Print Book Borrowing

Basics:

  • Currently this service is only available for Empire faculty and staff.
  • This service can only be used to request full print books. Average wait time is about a week but can take more time.
  • The service requires you to physically visit a University at Albany library to pick up and return any borrowed books (Books CAN NOT be returned to an Empire location).
  • You will need to present your SUNY Empire photo ID.
  • The loan period is generally for the rest of the current semester for faculty, but titles can be recalled or have a different loan period (you will get a notification from Albany if these latter options apply).

As there are a lot of steps in this process, we advise that you keep this tab open while requesting an item, or print out the steps.

  1. Go to the UAlbany Libraries advanced search (to keep these steps open, Right-Click on the UAlbany link and select "Open in a new tab"). See screen capture image below.
  2. Use the 'Sign In' link in the upper right.
  3. In the pop-up box, select "Empire State University (currently says College)" and enter in your regular Empire login credentials. Afterwards, your name should be displayed in the upper right of the page.
  4. To the right of "Search For" select "SUNY Libraries"
  5. On the right side, click "Material Type" and select Books (this is the only material type you can borrow).
  6. Add other search criteria as needed.
  7. On the results page: ignore any result that says "Available Online" - these are e-books and cannot be accessed through this service.
  8. Once you find a print title you'd like to borrow, click on the  "Available at" text under it (text following this will differ depending on the location that houses the title).
  9. On the next page, click the "Request from" link.
  10. Select a UAlbany Library Pickup Location and click "Send Request." (Note: Dewey Library is closed during the Summer).
  11. You will receive an email notification if/when the item is available for pick-up.
  12. Borrowed items must be returned to a University at Albany library location (or one of the outdoor bookdrops located in front of the University and Dewey Libraries).
  13. Questions about Albany library locations, request status, hours, policies, parking, and more should be directed to the UAlbany libraries. See also: UAlbany Contact Us page.
