How To Use Academic Video Online: Home

A.k.a. Alexander Street Video. Includes American History In Video, Counseling and Therapy In Video, and Ethnographic Video Online.

How To Search Alexander Street Video

Academic Video Online is a database of documentaries, educational videos and news footage. It does not contain popular movies. 

To Access Alexander Street Video

  1. Go to library's home page.
  2. Click Multimedia (lower left of home page).
  3. Click Academic Video Online.
  4. If prompted, enter your Empire login and password.

If you know the title of the film or film segment that you are searching for, Search is your best option. Just put the title in quotation marks in the search box and click the search icon. Otherwise, type in search words and click the search icon.. 

Filter (by subject, publisher, person name, content type and or release date) and sort results using the options are located just below the search box.

  1. Links to most controls are listed at the top of the page (not shown in screen capture above): fullscreen, transcript, details, clips, share, cite.
  2. To get a Permalink to a specific video (for later access or to share with someone), click the 'Share' button at the top and then click the red "Copy LTI Launch URL" button. The URL will be saved to your computer's clipboard so that you can then paste it into a document, course discussion, email, etc.
  3. Use the controls in the lower middle of the video to start, pause, or rewind the video.
  4. In the lower left, the total duration and time elapsed of the video is displayed, along with volume control.
  5. To the right of the video controls are icons for controlling closed captioning, video quality, display of video details, and fullscreen.
  6. To see full details of the video such as the production company and copyright information, click Details link at top, or the Cog icon in lower right.
  7. Note: The 'Cite this video" link to the right of the video title has options for APA, MLA, Chicago and more, but sometimes contains errors. Make sure you check the citation displayed against the guidelines for the style you are using.
