  • Linking is always fine. 
  • ONE chapter from a book, if you can't link to it in the library.
  • ONE article from a journal, if you can't link to it in the library.
  • A SUNY Empire produced accessible version of inaccessible content, if the copyright owner can't/won't give you the accessibility features you need.
  • Anything with a Creative Commons license OTHER than ND (no derivative works) or SA (share-alike.) So CC-BY and CC-NC are fine.

  • A full-length documentary or other non-fiction multimedia, OR clips of fictional/dramatic multimedia.
    • Related to learning objectives only - not decorative
    • Attributed, marked as copyrighted content, "further reproduction or distribution is prohibited by law"
    • Legal copy, legally obtained
    • Not content that targets the educational market (Pearson, Cengage, etc.) 
  • Images
    • Related to learning objectives only - not decorative
    • Attributed, marked as copyrighted content, "further reproduction or distribution is prohibited by law"
  • Creative Commons content with an ND (no derivative works) license
    • Used exactly as it was found with no modifications. Not incorporated into another piece of content. 
  • Creative Commons content with a SA (share alike) license
    • If it is remixed or incorporated into a new piece of content, that ALSO has to be put under a Creative Commons share alike license, which rules out incorporating other works that require more restrictive licenses. 
  • Content that's not labeled Creative Commons but has some kind of statement about being free for educational or non-profit use.
  • Something that might be a transformative work.
  • Something that might be public domain.

  • Library content reproduced within the course
  • Multiple chapters from a book reproduced within the course
  • Multiple articles from a journal reproduced within the course
  • Textbook content or homework/quiz content from the publisher reproduced within the course
  • Full-length entertainment media reproduced within the course
  • Sharing materials obtained through Interlibrary Loan as course materials
