Self-Help

Tutorials to help you use the library, do academic level research, and find resources.

How do I get the full-text for an item?

  1. By default, everything you see on a OneSearch results page should be available in full-text and you can click on the full-text link under it to access it. This full-text link can vary in wording, such as View Online, View PDF, and others.
  2. If you don't find what you need on an initial set of results, you can click the "Didn't find what you were looking for?" link located just above the first result. On those pages, not everything on every results page is available in full-text (sometimes it is useful to know something exists, even if we don't have access to it).
  3. Any article, dissertation or theses, or single book chapter not available in our library can be requested through inter-library loan (ILL). If available, a link to it sent to you (often within one business day).  Details on requesting items via ILL process here.
  4. If an item is NOT available for ILL or you can't wait, you can try contacting your local academic or public library to see if they might have the item in print so you might visit that library in person, and read it there or photocopy it. You need to contact that local library for details. Note: active Empire students can borrow circulating print materials at most SUNY/CUNY libraries.
  5. In some discipline-specific databases, such as EBSCOHost: you may also see a 'Full-Text Finder' link: that will take you into OneSearch to try and find the item record to access it or request it from ILL.
