Citing Your Sources: Chicago / Turabian

The Chicago Manual of Style is the foundational reference work for Chicago style, and informs the online Chicago style guides below, but it also contains extensive instruction for professionals publishing in their fields. Kate L. Turabian's Manual for Writers of Research Papers, Theses, and Dissertations contains citation style information similar to Chicago style, but it is scaled down and geared for students.

Chicago and Turabian styles both use two systems for citing: 1) the notes-bibliography system, and 2) the author-date system. Choosing between the two systems often depends on subject matter and the nature of sources cited, as each system is favored by different groups of scholars. The notes and bibliography style is preferred by many in the humanities. The author-date system has long been used by those in the physical, natural, and social sciences. Ask your instructor which system is preferred for your assignment.
