You might be used to your local public library where you can walk inside and see the newspapers available or maybe you are used to going to newspaper websites and trying to read stories but you get the pop up that says you need to pay to be able to read more. The SUNY Empire online library has access to hundreds of newspapers, many up to today's current issue. It works differently than going to the newspaper website because our access is through library databases. The two we get asked about most are New York Times and Wall Street Journal. The answer is YES, we have both of them. They have their own databases so they are listed on the Newspapers link that I talk about more in the directions below.
There are 2 ways to find newspapers in the online library.
#1 On the library homepage, scroll down to the bottom of the list and you will see the link for Newspapers in the left column.
When you select the Newspaper links, you will see our Newspaper Databases. Some of the databases are for many newspapers, some are for news in particular subject areas, some are for only 1 popular newspaper, and some are historic newspapers. You will see information about what that database contains in the description.
Select one of the databases from the list to search in that database or browse by date for specific publications.
#2 The other way to find newspapers in the online library works if you know the name of the newspaper you are looking for.
On the library homepage, scroll down and select E-Journals A-Z.
This is our journal search but it also works for magazines and newspapers.
Select E-Journals A-Z.
Search for the newspaper you are looking for. It may pop up with some options similar to what you are typing. You can finish typing or select a match for what you are searching for from the suggestions that show up. Hit Search (the magnifying glass).
When you get to the search results list, select the one that best matches what you are looking for.
When you select the title for the newspaper you want, the record for the paper will show up. The date by the title does not mean we have it for that date, it means those are the dates the newspaper has been in publication. To see the dates we have available, look down in the list below View Online: Full text availability. That is where you will see what databases in our library have this newspaper and what dates are available.
Click on the database title to access the newspaper. You can search within the publication or browse by date here. You can also confirm which dates are available here in the database.
If you still have questions about how to find a newspaper or a newspaper article in the online library, you can Ask a Librarian.
Ask Us 24/7 chat is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week with librarians elsewhere able to help you when the SUNY Empire librarians are not available.
