This is a self-paced, non-credit course that covers research skills, critical thinking, media and internet literacy, and understanding the complexities of the modern information environment (including libraries.)

At the end of this section, you will know how to:

  • Use a concept chart to break down your research topic into concepts
  • Use the concept chart to brainstorm synonyms and related terms to search for better results
  • Craft effective searches in Google
  • Craft effective searches in library databases and catalogs
  • Search for particular kinds of information sources on your topic, such as case studies, research articles, meta-analyses, etc
  • Search for information sources from a particular date range, of a particular document type, etc
  • Search for information sources by author, title, or the journal in which it was published
  • Locate descriptors/subject terms
  • Expand your search using descriptor chaining
  • Expand your search using citation chaining
  • Find items not available in the SUNY Empire Library.
