Research Skills Tutorial

This is a self-paced, non-credit course that covers research skills, critical thinking, media and internet literacy, and understanding the complexities of the modern information environment (including libraries.)

Portfolio Activity for Managing Search Results

In this fourth portfolio assignment, you will be searching in library databases and Google for information sources about your topic. You will use the Boolean searches that you constructed in the Topic 3 portfolio assignment, but you will also fine-tune them by:

  • limiting by date
  • limiting by document type
  • limiting by all-scholarly

In addition, you will use the results you get from your initial searches to modify and improve your subsequent searches, using techniques like:

  • citation chaining
  • searching using controlled vocabulary

For this assignment, copy this search log template, complete it, and submit it.

Take this opportunity to find the information sources that you will later evaluate and use to create your annotated bibliography. Copy and use this template.

Take down the information you will need to go back to each information source. At minimum, its full title and the permalink. (It is smart to also download the article too.)

Here you will find instructions for locating permalinks to database articles.

Here are the kinds of information sources you need to find:

  • a reference source
  • web page/site
  • electronic/online article
  • ebook
  • print article
  • print book
  • a multimedia item
  • five other information sources
