Maple Files

Following are general instructions for saving, attaching, and opening Maple files in your course. Attaching a Maple file should be the same as attaching any other file to a discussion or assignment. Opening a Maple file attachment in the course is not always direct. Note that different computer Operating Systems and Internet Browsers may vary these details, so it is important to try this out.

How to open a Maple file attachment included in a course discussion post, assignment, or mail message (this is different than document or spreadsheet files):

  • Do NOT open the Maple file in the course – you may just get a bunch of xml code.
  • Instead, download and save the file (right-click, Save target as, which opens browse window).
  • If your browse window doesn’t show Maple Worksheet as the File type, see below***.
  • If you are asked if you want to open the file, click NO.
  • Go to your computer desktop and start a Maple session (if not already open).
  • Once in Maple session, click on the File menu, choose Open, and browse to the file you just downloaded and saved.

***If your file browse window doesn’t show Maple Worksheet as the File type (shows filename.xml):

  • Change “.xml” to “.mw” (no quotes) as the extension at the end of the Filename
  • In “Save as type” drop-down, change to “All Files”
  • Select folder location and click the Save button.

This problem primarily occurs with Internet Explorer, while Firefox and Chrome seem to operate fine.

How to Save your Maple file in your Maple session: In your Maple session click File, then Save as Maple worksheet (.mw), providing an appropriate filename with your initials (for example:  M2D1xmpls_mdo.mw) or whatever filename pattern your instructor wants.

How to Attach your file to a discussion post, along with your thoughts. To attach a file of any type to a new (or reply) discussion post:

  • Click on “add a file” below the discussion text box, which opens Add attachment box.
  • Click Select, which opens a browse window for your files.
  • Locate and click on your file and click Open in the browse window.
  • Your file path will appear to the left of the Select button in the Add attachment box.
  • Click Upload button. Your file should appear below “add a file” link.
  • Don’t forget to Save the post after typing text and attaching file.
  • To upload a file for an assignment submittal, the process is very similar.
